HOW TO RECOGNIZE
& AVOID JOB SCAMS

CATHOLIC MULTICULTURAL

CENTER

When you're looking for a new job, it can be tempting to jump at new opportunities.  However, if a job offer seems too good to  be true, it could be a scam. Many jobs scams  have a few things in common that you  should  watch for:

  • The potential employer says you can make fast money working from home.
  • You are asked to pay money to the employer up front.
  • Emails from the employer are full of spelling and grammatical errors.
  • The employer asks for personal and bank account information up front.
  • You are asked to transfer money through Western Union or MoneyGram.

Empowerment Through Opportunity is closed when City of Madison Schools are closed, or the Sheriff’s Department advises people not to drive due to hazardous weather.  Please use your own discretion in determining whether it is safe for you to travel to our office, even if we are open, as weather conditions may be different in your area.

CLOSED FOR HOLIDAYS ON:

Please note these law changes may impact your unemployment benefits:

Currently, pre-tax salary deductions and payments are not reportable for tax purposes but can be included as base period wages upon request from the claimant. Effective 9/30/13, pre-tax salary deductions and payments will no longer be included as base period wages upon request from the claimant

Effective with claims filed for weeks ending 07/13/13 and later, claimants required to look for work must complete at least four work search actions each week. This is an increase from the current requirement of two work search actions each week. Failure to search for work as required may result in a denial of benefits. UNEMPLOYMENT WORK SEARCH FORM

  1. You will be ineligible for benefits in a week if you worked, could have worked, received or will receive holiday, vacation, dismissal pay or sick pay for 32 or more hours in the week.

  1. You will be ineligible for benefits in a week you have earnings and/or holiday, vacation, dismissal or sick pay exceeding $500.

  1. New consequences for fraud: Reduction of future benefits for acts of fraud increased to two, four and eight times the weekly benefit rate.

  1. A new 15% penalty on fraudulent overpayments will be imposed.

A reminder, if you owe money to Unemployment Insurance, be aware the department is authorized to recover benefit overpayments from your Federal Income Tax refund (Department of Treasury payment).

A reminder, there is a waiting week for benefits. For every new benefit year, no benefits are payable for the first week you would otherwise be eligible for benefits.
